Liposuction is the gold standard for fat reduction treatments, helping patients eliminate stubborn fat in the stomach, thighs, hips and other areas of the body. Liposuction is often a great solution for patients who are near their ideal body weight but still have a few stubborn pounds that are resistant to diet and exercise. Patients who are considering liposuction have two options when it comes to the procedure: the traditional, surgical liposuction procedure and the non-surgical, non-invasive alternative called CoolSculpting®.
Let’s face it — eating healthy and exercising don’t always work as promised. You have dedicated your time and energy to following a healthy lifestyle, yet you still have little bulges of fat in the most unappealing places. These problem areas have little to do with how hard you are working and more to do with the different types of fat in the human body. There are two types of fat – the fat that develops around your internal organs that is easy to reduce and subcutaneous fat that is much more difficult to reduce. This is where CoolSculpting® can help.
Freeze Away FatYou may have heard a little bit about CoolSculpting® and be wondering if it really works. To put it simply, it does. The technology behind CoolSculpting® was discovered by accident by two medical researchers. They noticed that cool objects created a dimpled effect in the skin. So how does CoolSculpting® work exactly? The process of freezing fat cells causes the outer membrane to break down. This releases the contents inside the cell to be used as energy or removed by the body.
CoolSculpting® BenefitsWhen you reduce fat through diet and exercise, you are just shrinking the fat cells. These cells can regain size, which is why you may notice that you lose fat in areas only to have the fat return. CoolSculpting® destroys fat cells. You may gain fat around the treatment area, and some people do develop new fat cells, so we recommend that you continue to diet and exercise. Unlike liposuction, CoolSculpting® is non-invasive. You can reduce fat without surgery, downtime or scars. The treatment takes 30 to 45 minutes.
CoolSculpting® Treatment AreasCoolSculpting® can be used on almost any part of your body, such as:
- Double chin (submental area)
- Love handles
- Under the buttocks
What to Expect from CoolSculpting®CoolSculpting® is a very comfortable treatment. The CoolSculpting® device is placed on the treatment area. You will feel a cooling sensation that indicates fat cells are being frozen. Some treatment areas require a suction mechanism to pull the skin into a freezing chamber. The area will feel numb for a little while, and then you may notice some tingling as the feeling comes back. You may need a series of treatments to reduce the fat.

- Redness and swelling immediately after injection for 24-36 hours. This is usually minimal, and most people have no problems interacting socially immediately after injection
- Some mild bruising (which depends on patient, the product and the injector) which subsides over 4-5 days. Many patients experience no bruising at all.
- The final cosmetic result is achieved once swelling subsides after 5-7 days.
- Sleeping with head slightly elevated helps with swelling after injection
- Gentle icing immediately after injection helps with swelling and bruising
CoolSculptingCoolSculpting has a minimal recovery time and most patients can return to their normal daily routine directly after each session. You can expect none or some of the following symptoms immediately after the procedure. These symptoms may persist for up to several weeks. Most patients have very mild symptoms but, as with any medical procedure, each patient experiences it uniquely. Symptoms always subside over time and have NO long lasting complications. The treated area may be red for up to a few hours after the applicator is removed. This is an expected but temporary effect. Bruising, swelling and tenderness can occur in the treated area. This typically resolves within a week or two. Nausea, tingling, stinging and cramping in the treatment area are possible on treatment day. You may feel a temporary dulling of sensation or itching sensitivity in the treated area. Numbness at the site is common, resolving over 1-3 weeks.
MicrodermabrasionTwo of the most gratifying benefits of microdermabrasion are rapid recovery and near-immediate results. In the time it would take to grab a quick lunch, patients can dramatically rejuvenate their skin, reduce the appearance of mild acne scars, and achieve a healthy, vibrant glow. After the first microdermabrasion treatment, the complexion will have a pink or red glow, which typically fades after a day. Redness may last slightly longer after more aggressive dermabrasion treatments. The skin may feel as though it were sun- or wind-burned, but this sensation should subside fairly quickly. During microdermabrasion recovery, patients generally experience immediate improvements, but optimal results will not be visible until the patient has completed all recommended treatments. A typical course of treatment ranges from five to twelve sessions spaced a week or two apart.
While CoolSculpting and tummy tucks both result in the slimming and tightening of the abdominal region, there are a few key differences between the two that are important to note. CoolSculpting is a wonderful option for those that wish to reduce unwanted fat in specific regions, such as the “love handles” in the lower abdominals. One benefit to using this procedure is that it is a non-surgical fat reduction, meaning that no anesthesia or incisions will be used. This results in no downtime and makes recovery a breeze! Specifically, the CoolSculpting process targets fat cells and freezes them in order to destroy them (without harming nearby cells, tissues, or muscles!) An added bonus of this is that patients with health issues that prevent them from using surgical methods to remove fat are often eligible candidates for CoolSculpting! CoolSculpting candidates must have a decent amount of elasticity in their skin, as CoolSculpting does not prevent or fix any sagging or loose skin. Candidates that are looking to improve the appearance of sagging skin would be better suited for the tummy tuck. The tummy tuck is more invasive than CoolSculpting, but it is quite transforming. It addresses three main issues that contribute to the stubborn rolls of fat in the abdominal skin that many individuals cannot seem to lose. First, it allows the surgeon to repair any muscle separation. Second, liposuction is used to remove fatty pockets. And third, excess skin is removed in order to give the stomach a tight and smooth appearance. Ideal candidates for the tummy tuck have fat that they wish to get rid of along with hanging or loose skin. Candidates must also have a fairly flexible schedule, as recovery takes around 2 to 3 weeks. Aside from differences in procedures and eligibility, another important distinction between the tummy tuck and CoolSculpting is in their costs. CoolSculpting runs much cheaper per session, however multiple sessions may be needed to get the desired result. Have you heard of CoolSculpting? It is an amazing procedure that can slim down fatty areas of your body with results similar to those of liposuction or tucks, but without any anesthesia, incisions, or downtime following the procedure! In other words, it is a non-surgical fat reduction that helps to contour the body into its most desirable shape. But with all body types being so different… does it work equally well on every patient? A consultation with Dr. Christopher Killingsworth of Atlanta Aesthetics is the best way to determine if CoolSculpting is a good fit for you, but here are some general guidelines to go by: CoolSculpting is meant for individuals of a mostly healthy weight that nevertheless have stubborn fat deposits in specific regions of the body, such as the inner thighs or lower abdomen. Excellent candidates are those that routinely exercise and follow a healthy diet, but still have bothersome fat deposits such as “love handles.” For those with a pear shaped body (slender on the top and wider throughout the hips), CoolSculpting is ideal as it helps to take the emphasis off of the fuller hips and bottom by reducing the fat and balancing the overall shape of the body! For those that identify as having an apple shape (a round belly and chest region with slender legs), CoolSculpting minimizes lingering belly fat to create a more slim and pleasing appearance from head to toe! Overall, CoolSculpting can work well on a number of different body types, so long as the individual is at or near their target weight and does not have an excess of saggy or loose skin.
