Surgery to Remove Excess Fat

Liposuction in Atlanta, GALiposuction is a surgical procedure that improves the contour and proportions of your figure by removing excess fat from a specific area of the body. Some of the most common areas treated with liposuction include the chin, neck, arms, stomach, hips, back, “love handles,” buttocks, legs, knees, ankles, and the inner and outer thighs. Liposuction is also a procedure used to treat a condition called gynecomastia (male breast enlargement) that frequently occurs in both teenagers and adult men. Liposuction is not an alternative to weight loss but at Atlanta Aesthetics, Dr. Killingsworth offers this procedure for patients who want to achieve a smoother, trimmer body for the areas of fat that are stubbornly resistant to diet and exercise.

  • Remove fat with exceptional precision
  • Maintain natural contours

Evaluation for Liposuction and Excess Fat Removal

In order to be considered for liposuction, you should be close to your ideal weight, so Dr. Killingsworth first discuss your diet and exercise routines. If you are a good candidate, they examine your fatty deposits to determine the best surgical approach. They describe how the procedure will improve your natural contours and what you can expect after liposuction. Dr. Killingsworth advises his patients that liposuction permanently removes the fat you have now, but the potential exists to have new fat develop in the treatment area.

The Liposuction Procedure

There are two primary types of liposuction, and the amount of wetting solution injected before the procedure varies depending on the technique used.

Liposuction Options

Tumescent liposuction is distinguished from the Super-Wet technique by the amount of fluid injected and the differences include:
  • Super-Wet Liposuction: The wetting solution is equal to the volume of fat removed, and this technique requires intravenous (IV) sedation or general anesthesia.
  • Tumescent Liposuction: This wetting solution is two to three times the volume of fat removed, and this solution causes fat deposits to swell (tumesce). The tumescent liposuction is the most commonly used technique and requires either local anesthesia sedation or general anesthesia.
Dr. Killingsworth will inject the solution (decided upon during your consultation) into the area (s) to be treated. The solution is comprised of salt water, epinephrine (a medication that shrinks blood vessels helping to decrease bleeding and bruising) and a local anesthetic to temporarily minimize pain both during and after surgery. After the fluid has been injected, Dr. Killingsworth will make a small incision in your skin near the area that contains the fat targeted for removal. A narrow metal tube (cannula) that is attached to a vacuum pump will then be inserted through the incision into the area of excess fat. By manipulating the cannula back and forth through the fat, Dr. Killingsworth will remove the fat cells before closing the incision with sutures.

Depending on a person’s individual healing capacity, typically liposuction is an outpatient procedure with most patients returning to work after a few days and resuming normal activities within two weeks. The outcome will vary based on the area and volume of fat cells removed and your expected results will be discussed during your consultation, as well as how to best maintain your new body contour. No skin is removed during a liposuction procedure so your skin’s contraction and elasticity will be required to maintain your new shape. The fat cells extracted during liposuction are permanently eliminated, meaning that if you gain weight after your procedure, it usually will not accumulate in the area that was treated, but it is important to remember that liposuction will not prevent you from gaining weight. To keep your new figure and trim physique after liposuction, you must maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise routine. Dr. Killingsworth will work closely with you to create satisfying results that you can be proud of, so if you are interested in liposuction or any other cosmetic procedure offered at Atlanta Aesthetics, please contact us today.

As we get older, our bodies lose the ability to eliminate fat. Diet and exercise alone cannot give you back a toned and tight body, but liposuction can! Contact Atlanta Aesthetics today to schedule a consultation with double board-certified Atlanta plastic surgeon, Dr. Christopher Killingsworth.
