Lip augmentation is a method of enhancing lip volume and shape. Lip augmentation techniques can be used to address age-related volume loss or to simply enhance the lips for a more glamorous appearance. Lip implants are one option for lip augmentation, but these require surgery and often produce results that don’t look fully natural. Lip fillers are a minimally invasive treatment that can provide long-lasting and natural-looking volume. Plus, patients have multiple treatment options to ensure they achieve the results they desire.
In today’s society, having big and luscious lips is a desired and sought after physical feature for women. Luscious lips is an attainable goal if you consider lip injections and/or a lip augmentation.
Lip Augmentations OptionsThere are a variety of ways you can achieve fuller lips. Lip augmentation is a surgical, cosmetic procedure that can give you fuller, plumper lips using implants or fat transfer. A more common and non-invasive solution is lip injections. Restylane®, Perlane®, and Juvéderm® are popular choices to enhance the lips. These injectable fillers are known as hyaluronic acid (HA). Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in your body, which is in part why this procedure is so sought after. Alternatively, Atlanta Aesthetics offers laser lip rejuvenation. When deciding which of these options is best for you and your body we cannot stress enough the importance of speaking with a doctor. Contact us today to schedule a consultation and pinpoint a lip augmentation procedure that is ideal for you and your unique needs.
Expectations for Lip AugmentationsInjectable lip augmentation techniques can be performed quickly in our office with little to no downtime. Before the injections, a topical or local numbing agent may be applied to ease discomfort. A doctor will use very fine needles to inject the chosen substance into the target lip areas. Lip injections are quick, easy, and relatively non-invasive. Other lip augmentation options, like lip augmentation via implants or a fat transfer are surgical options that require an incision to be made, typically at the corners of your mouth. These procedures can be performed under local anesthesia, conscious sedation, or general anesthesia. Dr. Christopher Killingsworth and Dr. Cristen Catignani of Atlanta Aesthetics invite you to schedule a consultation at our Atlanta or Cumming office to learn more about lip augmentations. We are proud to serve clients throughout Forsyth County and look forward to hearing from you soon. We want to help you fall in love with your lips.
If you are considering lip enhancing injections, here are some guidelines to make sure that you have the best experience possible. Read on for the best way to prepare for the “before” and “after” of your treatment.
The Lip Injection Dos
- You should have ideas of what you want. Just like when buying any product, you can research and bring in pictures of what you would like to achieve with your doctor.
- Do let your injector know if you suffer from cold sores.
- Be prepared for a little discomfort! Make sure to prepare foods that are easy to eat without much lip smacking such as smoothies or bite sized snacks.
- Keep on ice! It is important to keep down swelling when undergoing any procedure. But not only does ice minimize swelling, it also lowers the chance of bruising.
- Make sure to use an extra pillow for added elevation when sleeping the night after your procedure. This helps prevent swelling.
- It takes a week for full results! So do be patient.
The Lip Injection Don’ts
- Please be careful when using painkillers such as aspirin since they tend to be a blood thinner. Blood thinners can increase swelling and the chance for bruising.
- Do not have treatment right before any big events. Results do not fully develop until a week after the procedure but it is safe to give yourself double that time for recovery.
- Don’t freak out if bruising and swelling occurs even if you’re doing all the right things. Every person has a different body that reacts to different procedures in different ways. Bruising and swelling will go away but it may take a little longer than usual.
- Don’t expect long lasting results! On average, lip injections last between 6 and 9 months.
According to recent statistics published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), a record number of Americans underwent lip augmentation procedures last year. Second only to dermabrasion procedures, lip augmentations have become the fast growing cosmetic procedure in the United States. With the rising popularity of Instagram, Facebook and other forms of social media, people are becoming increasingly self-conscious about how they look. Lip procedures offer people the benefit of sculpting their lips into any shape, adding volume or achieving subtle but appealing changes. The ASPS report revealed that every region of the country saw an increase in the number of lip implant procedures in 2015. Both men and women opted for this cosmetic procedure for a total of 27,449 procedures last year, resulting in the 48% increase not seen since 2000. Close behind lip implants, the ASPS reported that lip injections have also become increasingly popular. A combination of subdermal fillers and injectables such as Botox® and Dysport® accounted for a total of 9.2 million lip augmentation procedures last year, a whopping 1,000% percent increase over the past 15 years. Plastic surgeons are seeing a lot of first-time clients come in for lip procedures. Some people who aren’t ready for eyelid surgeries or a facelift enjoy the benefits and appeal of a quick and safe treatment to improve the shape of their lips. An additional benefit to lip injections is their temporary nature. If a client is unhappy with the results of an injection, there’s no long-term concern as the effects wear off in a few months and the lips return to their original shape. But on the other hand, if the client likes how injections have improved the appearance of their lips, they can come back for a maintenance treatment to preserve the effect. For clients wanting a more permanent solution, lip implants are available. Implants can be reversible, but most clients choose them because of new breakthroughs in technology that allow for the permanent enhancement of the shape and volume of their lips. Today’s newest models of lip implants are made from a soft, flexible silicone that looks and feels more natural. Far more stable than previous models, lip implants can be inserted quickly, and the procedure requires very little down time. Dr. Killingsworth just makes two small incisions at the corners of a patient’s mouth to insert the implant. After that, he puts the implant into place, and the procedure is done. With two nearly invisible stitches, a minimal amount of bruising, swelling and discomfort, the patient has very little downtime afterward. Along with the published data, ASPS reported the results of a national survey where more than 1,000 women were questioned about which celebrity’s lips they would most like to have. Jennifer Lawrence was the most popular response, followed by Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Garner, and Angelina Jolie respectively. The ASPS believes that a similar rise in popularity for lip reduction procedures may be motivated by the ability and affordability to achieve a more natural look. According to the ASPS, lip reduction procedures rose more than 34% compared to 2013, with 927 individuals electing to undergo the surgery in the United States in 2015.
