Meet Plastic Surgeon Dr. Catignani
Dr. Cristen Catignani is a double board certified plastic surgeon—and, as a female surgeon and mother of two, she provides a unique perspective to patient care and restorative surgery after pregnancy.
Dr. Catignani takes pride in spending a significant amount of time listening to her patients, in order to individualize each patients care. Her attention to detail and understanding of each patient’s personal desires and concerns help her achieve exceptional surgical results. Dr. Catignani is an advocate for women’s health and she strives to inform and empower women to restore confidence through both reconstruction and cosmetic surgery.
Dr. Cristen Catignani grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee. She graduated from The Florida State University with honors and was the recipient of the Twenty-first Century Scholarship and the American Cancer Society James R. Fisher Summer Research Fellowship. She also participated in multiple philanthropic efforts including volunteering for Hospice and a medical mission to Haiti through International Medical Outreach. She then attended the University of Tennessee Health Science Center for medical school, where she and served as Vice President of her class, a representative to the Liaison Committee on Medical Education as well as earned an additional certificate in Interdisciplinary Health Policy and Leadership.
Dr. Catignani then continued her surgical training at the prestigious University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she completed a five-year residency in general surgery, focusing on breast and cancer surgery, vascular surgery and minimally-invasive (laparoscopic) techniques. After serving as chief resident, she then went on to complete a fellowship in microsurgery specializing in free tissue transfer for reconstruction and focusing on breast cancer reconstruction. A Plastic surgery fellowship was then completed at the University of Alabama at Birmingham where she received extensive operative training with broad exposure to complex reconstruction and advanced cosmetic surgery. Some of the specific areas of training include breast reconstruction, cosmetic surgery of the face, breast and body, and complex hand injury management. During her nine years of surgical training after medical school, she had the opportunity to be educated and shaped by many leaders in general and plastic surgery.
Dr. Catignani and her husband Thomas Matthews, a Vascular Surgeon, live in Fulton County with their two daughters and two dogs. They enjoy all outdoor activities including hiking and boating, travelling and spending time with their families.
