Lip Augmentation in Atlanta, GA
In today’s society, full lips are an indication of youth and beauty as proudly displayed by many famous celebrities and models. Most women are not born with naturally full lips, and fortunately today’s plastic surgery techniques include lip augmentation to improve the overall appearance of a woman’s lips. Dr. Cristen Catignani and Dr. Christopher Killingsworth of Atlanta Aesthetics, a double board-certified plastic surgeon, offer the women of Forsyth County lip augmentation at their Cumming and Johns Creek offices.
Surgery to Enhance the Lips
Even well-defined lips change over time because as we age, our lips tend to droop and become thinner. Fine vertical lines appear around the red portion and border of the lip (called the white line) allowing lipstick to bleed and when lips lose their fullness: a woman looks older than she is and in some cases she may even look angry. Aesthetically, the lower lip should be 50% wider and fuller than the upper lip and each year women spend millions of dollars purchasing and applying cosmetics in hopes of increasing the appearance of their lips.
Benefits of Lip Augmentation
If you think your lips are too thin and you are not satisfied with their size or appearance, Dr. Killingsworth and Dr. Catignani offer many options of lip augmentation to improve your lips. Lip augmentation, also known as lip enhancement, is a procedure using a variety of surgical and minimally invasive techniques to enhance the appearance of the upper and lower lips. Since the lips are a defining characteristic of the face, lip augmentation is a commonly performed procedure at Atlanta Aesthetics and using advanced lip-contouring procedures, Dr. Killingsworth and Dr. Catignani will provide results that look naturally beautiful. Lip augmentation is not only an appearance-enhancing procedure; it is also an anti-aging procedure since thinner lips are one of the most noticeable and universal signs of aging. Adding volume and definition to thin lips can have a positive benefit for the entire facial appearance and besides augmenting your lips for a more youthful look, lip augmentation can also reduce the fine wrinkles around your mouth.
Evaluation for Lip Augmentation
Lip enhancement can be achieved with the use of injectable fillers, fat harvested from another part of the body, laser rejuvenation, or through other surgical techniques that include the implantation of synthetic biocompatible materials. The results can be very dramatic or subtle, depending on your personal desires, so if you are unhappy with your lips and ready to do something about it, the first step is to call Atlanta Aesthetics. During your consultation with Dr. Killingsworth or Dr. Catignani, they will carefully evaluate your lips and recommend a treatment plan that they feel will work best for you. They will discuss your aesthetic objectives so they can determine whether they are realistic and can be achieved with a lip enhancement procedure. It is very important to remember that lip size is a very personal issue and you should choose lip augmentation for you: not to please someone else or live up to another person’s expectations.
The Lip Augmentation Procedure
The lips are one of the most sensitive areas on the face and lip augmentation is a very safe procedure that involves few risks. At Atlanta Aesthetics, Dr. Killingsworth, Dr. Catignani and their compassionate team will do everything possible to make your lip augmentation experience as comfortable as possible.
Lip Augmentation Options
Some of the lip augmentation options include:
- Lip Augmentation Using Implants: Lip augmentation surgery with implants is a permanent solution to plumping and reshaping your lips. Lip implants are shaped like small tubes filled with synthetic material and the most common types include GORE-TEX, SoftForm, and AlloDerm. A lip augmentation surgery with implants is typically performed as an outpatient procedure and it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours depending on the technique used and the extent of your lip augmentation. Local anesthesia is generally used, but a local anesthetic combined with intravenous (IV) sedation is also an option for some patients. After you are comfortably anesthetized, Dr. Killingsworth or Dr. Catignani will make small incisions at the corners of your mouth or along the upper line of your lip to delicately create a thin tunnel in order to accommodate the implants. The shape and size of the tunnel is essential to producing well-balanced, natural-looking lips. To complete the procedure, the lip implants are inserted and positioned in place through the lips before they are trimmed and the incisions closed. The implants will eventually become one with your natural lip tissues enhancing the fullness of your lips and the results are permanent as long as the implant remains in place.
- Lip Injections: One of the simplest ways to enhance the lips is with injectable fillers, where a liquid/gel-consistency filler material is injected underneath the skin of the lips and vermillion border. Injectable dermal fillers are the most commonly used method of lip augmentation. In the past collagen was considered the best injectable, but today there are many choices that can be injected into your lips and around your mouth. The most popular fillers are products that contain substances similar to hyaluronic acid (a natural substance found in your body). Hyaluronic acid fillers can improve the appearance of your lips by adding shape, structure, and volume. There are several hyaluronic acid fillers on the market that include Restylane®, Perlane®, and Juvéderm® to name a few. All of these products contain lidocaine, which is used to reduce discomfort. Before your injections, a topical or local numbing agent may be applied. After carefully marking the areas to be injected, very fine needles are used to inject the filler substance into your lips. Following the injection(s), ice may be applied to ease discomfort and control swelling and you can return to work and perform normal activities immediately with no physical restrictions. You should be able to notice a difference immediately after your injection fillers and once you have healed, your lips will look youthful and feel natural. The longevity of results will vary as injectable fillers slowly fade away over time. In general, patients are very satisfied with the results of their injectable lip augmentation for an average of six to nine months and many maintain their look with yearly re-injections.
- Fat Injections: Implants and injectable fillers are two options for lip augmentation and autologous fat grafting is another. Autologous fat grafting is referred to by other names and some of the most common include free-fat transfer, fat transplantation, micro-lip injection, volume restoration, and fat injections. Lip augmentation with autologous fat grafting begins when fat is harvested from the lower half of a patient’s body (usually the hips, thighs or abdomen) and the harvested fat is then processed. This involves separating the fat cells with the fluid found in the fat. After the processing component of the procedure has been completed, the appropriate amount of fat is injected through invisible needle-size holes on either side of the lips. This procedure can be performed under local anesthesia, conscious sedation, or general anesthesia. Lip augmentation with fat can take up to one hour to complete and there are advantages and disadvantages associated with this procedure. Some risks include the possibility that if you put on weight, your lips will also grow larger as there are now fat cells in that location and the results can also be unpredictable because some of the fat that is injected into the lips does not survive.
- Laser Lip Rejuvenation: Another lip enhancement option is laser lip rejuvenation. This procedure is sometimes used to tighten and remodel the natural collagen and elastic tissue beneath your lips. Laser lip rejuvenation may also decrease lipstick lines, lip lines and lip wrinkles. This procedure is often combined with injectables to plump up the lips.
More women than men choose lip augmentation and although many want to have their lips augmented to achieve a more youthful look after they have grown older, numerous young people also opt to have lip augmentation to obtain a fuller lips and the desirable “pout”.
