Using Fat to Augment Facial Features
Throughout the evolution of plastic surgery, cosmetic procedures for the face have primarily focused on brow, eye, and facelift surgeries, chemical peels, laser resurfacing, facial implants, and various other skin rejuvenation techniques including dermal fillers and injections. With the surge of popularity in artificial fillers such as Restylane® and Juvéderm®, the attention has shifted somewhat to restoring facial volume with no downtime, but filler injections are temporary, and the maintenance can lead to considerable expense over time. Facial fat grafting offers an alternative to facial fillers and if a patient likes the quick results they see from temporary facial fillers, they will be thrilled with the natural and more permanent results that can be achieved with facial fat grafting.
Benefits of Fat Transfer & Injections
Fat grafting is a minimally invasive procedure that involves using the patient’s own fat typically from areas such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, or buttocks. Maintaining as much supporting structure as possible when harvesting fat preserves the structural integrity of the tissue and helps it retain bulk when transplanted into the targeted site. Almost any area can be used for harvesting, but the abdomen is easily accessible, and incisions can be hidden within the umbilicus or in the hair-bearing skin of the pubic area. Once the fat has been harvested and purified, it is then implanted in areas that need volume including the lips, the nasolabial folds (the folds from the corners of your mouth to your nose), under the eyes, the cheeks, and/or other parts of the face and body that need augmentation. It is successfully used to achieve aesthetic facial reshaping by accentuating the cheekbones, filling in facial defects or scars, plumping the lips, camouflaging dark circles underneath the eyes and improving overall facial contour. Because the injected fat becomes incorporated as living tissue, using your own fat as an injectable filler is close to perfect because it is soft, it feels natural, it does not cause immune problems, and the filler is not artificial making it extremely long-lasting.
Evaluation for Fat Transfer & Injections
Facial fat grafting is also known as facial fat transfer, micro-lipoinjection, facial fat rejuvenation, fat injection, and autologous fat grafting or transfer. At Atlanta Aesthetics, Dr. Killingsworth and Dr. Catignani offer many cosmetic procedures for facial rejuvenation and they believe that using the body’s own fat to replace lost volume in the face is a great option for patients seeking a more youthful appearance. One of the main causes of facial aging is decreasing volume and when a woman is young, her cheeks and chin are full creating a heart-shaped profile. As she grows older, the fullness diminishes, allowing the lower outer face and the area around the eyes to become deflated and hollow looking. Although it seems that extra skin forms around the jawline causing jowls to form, in actuality a reduction in fat volume occurs causing the area to sag. Fat tissue consists of fat cells that have thin cell membranes meshed together in a fibrous network and without the supporting fibers, the cells collapse. Losing subcutaneous fat on your face brings about a haggard, skeletal look and Dr. Killingsworth or Dr. Catignani can provide improved balance and harmony to your face by using selective fat grafting only in the areas that need it.
The Fat Transfer & Injections Procedure
Fat grafting takes from 1 to 2 hours, and it is performed as an outpatient procedure using a local anesthetic.
The facial fat grafting procedure basically involves three steps that include:
- Using a small syringe or blunt cannula, the fat is harvested from a donor site such as your abdomen, waist, inner thighs, or buttocks.
- The fat is spun in a centrifuge and purified to separate the excess fluid and impaired fat cells so that only whole, clean, and undamaged fat cells are used.
- The fat is then placed in small syringes and re-injected into the natural fat compartments in your face where volume is lost.
After your fat grafting procedure, you will be taken to the recovery room where you will be monitored until you are ready to be released, which typically takes two hours. Your face may feel tight and tender as the anesthesia wears off, and your donor site may be sore as well. Any discomfort can be controlled with medication prescribed by Dr. Killingsworth or Dr. Catignani. You will be told to rest and stay still for a few days after the procedure, and there is usually some bruising and swelling. The body absorbs some of the injected fat cells, so more fat cells than necessary are often injected during a fat grafting procedure to give your face a swollen appearance at first. This fullness will decrease over the next few weeks and immediately following your fat grafting procedure: most patients are able to see dramatic changes although this varies from patient-to-patient, and some results can last up to three years.
Today, people who are unhappy with their facial features are turning to facial fat grafting because it is beneficial for men and women from all walks of life who have gaunt, long, hollowed, asymmetric, bottom-heavy, or aging faces. To achieve optimal results, facial fat grafting is often combined with other cosmetic procedures, and thanks to modern technology there are numerous options for fat transfer aesthetic improvement, making it more dependable and convenient since the majority of people have enough fat tissue to use for their personal grafting procedure. Fat injections to the face are safe and non-allergenic, and because it allows for specific placement to designated areas: Dr. Killingsworth and Dr. Catignani can help you fight the signs of aging by sculpting and creating a beautiful, young-looking face with your own fat cells. Patients often choose facial fat grafting as an alternative to undergoing more invasive surgeries so if you want to learn more about fat grafting or any other cosmetic procedure offered at Atlanta Aesthetics, please contact us today.
