Facial Implants in Atlanta, GA

When one feature on your face is disproportionately small, it can affect your overall facial attractiveness making it appear asymmetrical and unbalanced. Facial implants from Atlanta Aesthetics enhance the natural contours of your features and improve the overall balance of your face. Voted Best Cosmetic Surgeon in 2015 by Best of Forsyth Reader’s Choice Awards, Dr. Christopher Killingsworth who works with Atlanta plastic surgeon, Dr. Cristen Catignani, is a double board-certified Atlanta plastic surgeon. Together they specialize in facial plastic surgery for the residents of Forsyth County, Cumming, Atlanta and nearby areas in Georgia.

Facial Plastic Surgery to Augment the Chin and Cheeks

Whether a face is narrow, wide, long, angulated, or round: the facial skeleton determines the three-dimensional shape of a person’s face. For this reason, bone deficiencies in the facial skeleton are also reflected on the surface of the skin and a small chin exaggerates the appearance of a large nose or a short neckline while undefined cheekbones make a face seem one-dimensional. Prominent malar bones (high cheekbones) are associated with facial attractiveness and because they add structural support to overlying tissues, high cheekbones reduce bags under the eyes and they limit soft tissues descent in the cheek and mid-face region. Despite the gravitational pull from the natural aging process, individuals who maintain their youthfulness attribute their “ageless” look to high cheekbones. The chin too is aesthetically important to the lower face as together with the nose, it determines a balanced facial profile. A prominent chin will strengthen the jawline, counteract soft-tissue facial aging in the lower face and neck, and prevent the formation of jowls from soft-tissue sagging (ptosis).

Benefits of Facial Plastic Surgery and Facial Implants

At Atlanta Aesthetics, people visit our Georgia practice wondering what they can do to improve their facial contour, and Dr. Killingsworth and Dr. Catignani are proud that they can offer help through facial implant surgery. Facial implants are designed for cosmetic or reconstructive purposes, and they are available in a variety of sizes and styles for the chin, jaw, nose, and cheek. Facial implants augment or restore contour and/or proportion to areas of poorly defined tissue and chin and cheek implants are the most frequently performed surgeries. A chin or cheek augmentation increases the size of a particular feature of the face and by modifying the shape of your chin or cheeks with a permanent implant: Dr. Killingsworth and Dr. Catignani can provide better balance and definition to your overall face.

Evaluation for Chin Implant or Cheek Implants

Chin and cheek augmentations are performed for adult men and women from all walks of life and during your consultation, Dr. Killingsworth or Dr. Catignani will determine if implants could benefit you. Although facial implant surgery can be performed as an independent procedure, Dr. Killingsworth and Dr. Catignani frequently combine other procedures such as a rhinoplasty, facelift, mini lift or neck lift to achieve optimal results in one operation. Most permanent chin and cheek augmentations take one to two hours and are performed as an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia or intravenous (IV) sedation.

Facial Implant Procedure

Implants have been used for many years, and the technique used to insert your implants will depend on the area where the implant needs to be positioned. The cheek and chin implants themselves are specially formed solid, biocompatible materials designed to augment the physical structures of your face and create more defined contours and angles.

Chin Implant Surgery

A chin implant (mentoplasty) is an operation to augment or reshape an underdeveloped chin and a “weak” chin often leads to a false perception of weakness, especially for men. For your chin implant, Dr. Killingsworth or Dr. Catignani will make a small, well-concealed incision under your chin or inside your mouth below your lower lip and through the incision they will create a pocket in the facial tissue before inserting the implant and suturing the incision closed. To complete your chin implant, the incision will be bandaged or taped and stitches are removed in 5 to 10 days while sutures placed inside the mouth will dissolve in the same amount of time.

Cheek Implant Surgery

Cheek, or malar, implants are placed to help enhance and balance the shape of the mid-facial region. Some people are genetically born with cheeks that are “flattened” in appearance and this is often a reflection of the underlying bony contour (facial skeleton) and not the soft tissue or fat pad within the cheek. This results in a “hollowed” appearance and overall poor facial definition and cheek implants are an excellent option to provide more fullness to the cheek region while maintaining a natural look. The incisions for cheek implant surgery are made inside the mouth, lower eyelid, or hairline, and you can be assured that Dr. Killingsworth and Dr. Catignani will make the incisions as discreet as possible to avoid unflattering scars. Through the incision, Dr. Killingsworth or Dr. Catignani will create a pocket for your implants that are custom-fitted to your facial features providing enhanced cheek projection and defined contour.

Facial Fat Grafting

A highly individualized treatment that can be used in conjunction with cosmetically enhancing procedures for the face, body, or breasts is fat grafting or fat transfer. Fat transfer, involves the removal of the patient’s own fat from another part of the body and during the procedure, fat cells are extracted from the target area and purified before being re-injected into the treatment area beneath the skin. Fat injection results are permanent, but quite often involve more than one treatment in order to build larger volumes. The ideal candidates for the fat transfer procedure are non-obese patients who have excess fat in another part of the body where fat injections can be harvested.

After your facial implant surgery, some temporary discomfort, bruising, and swelling in the area where the implant is placed should be expected. Tightness in the surgical area may make it hard to move your mouth for a few days, and any discomfort can be controlled with pain medication. While most after-effects should resolve in one to two weeks, continued subtle changes may occur for several months. This is normal. An attractive face is a combination of features that balance with each other and facial cheek and chin implant procedures dramatically define and harmonize the contours of your face. Patients are very pleased with the new symmetry in their face after their facial augmentation so if you are ready to refine your overall appearance, facial implants are a safe, effective surgery that can give you natural and impressive results.
